One Mango Tree, a member of Fair Trade Federation, strives to create meaningful and empowering work for women in post-conflict environments of the world. In Northern Uganda, a region emerging from more than twenty years of violent conflict, this means providing a market for apparel, handbags and accessories made by 40 talented tailors.
One Mango Tree tailors ride their bicycles to our workshop each morning with little ones in tow – infants and toddlers stay in our on-site daycare while Mom works. The ladies can laugh and sing as they work, knowing that the other school-age children they care for are supported through our school fees support. Each month they delight at their savings, a system we paired with financial literacy training. This year for Christmas, Apiyo Prisca is using her savings to put a roof on her new brick home. “The money I earn with One Mango Tree helps my family. My children are so happy to move into our new home – and we have electricity now, too!”
We feel that the most important product made in our workshop is community. In an area where conflict destroyed trust and social structure, the support system One Mango Tree tailors create through work is lasting.
