A non-governmental, nonprofit organization, Mitra Bali is a market and export facilitator for small craft producers. These small producers represent the diverse Balinese culture that attracts tourism to the area, but because they live in more remote areas and work on a small scale, they haven’t benefited from the tourism industry. To counter the marginalization of these producers, Mitra Bali works with 100 artisan groups employing over 1,000 men and women to help them market products and improve working conditions.
In addition to marketing assistance and a Design Center, Mitra Bali has a water program that provides 300 families in Abuan village with clean drinking water. Mitra Bali also promotes environmental awareness through an albesia tree replanting program and supports artisans when orders are low through a cow advocacy project that allows artisans to borrow livestock to generate income.
Recently, SERRV had the pleasure of hosting Mitra Bali’s senior designer, Komang Adiartha, at Design Camp 2010. Adi is responsible for the design of several new pieces of jewelry, such as the Brass Flower Medallion & Earrings, the Bold Saga Necklace, and the Golden Bronze Necklace. Adi told SERRV that his designs will now cater better to the US market, which will provide more orders for Mitra Bali and more work for artisans.
